Are there any means to improve illumination in operating field? Are there any materials which fluouresce or illuminate oral cavity and which are biocompatible?
As a dentist i felt that proper illumination of the operating field (oral cavity) is very much necessary for proper diagnosis. Here in many parts of our country (India), i felt it is lacking. So my query is... Are there any means by which we can increase the illumination of oral cavity? for example: before diagnosing lets ask the patient to gargle his/her mouth with some 'substance' (which fluoresce) so that the oral cavity illuminates brilliantly making our diagnosis effective and efficient! Can we do research in this angle? Is it relevant? Because most of the tumors, pathologies are going unnoticed due to lack of proper illumination.
There are things that will show up tumours already developed, perhaps we can aim at finding out cost involved and accuracy, and operator differentiation, then we can apply for funding for this to be a NHS service to all? Ie a formal oral screen akin to the smear?
