This paper provides a background to the Shirley Glasstone Hughes Trust Fund which has been sponsoring dental research since 1991. The paper also describes the Trust Fund's current activities which include the launch of the new Primary Care Dentistry Research Forum. Practitioner level involvement is key to setting the research agenda in primary dental care.
