Professor David Johns asked for the questions to be added to the discussion forum and has commented as follows:

"Because of the review being undertaken by a high-profile Department of Health group of dentists into this general topic it can be expected that, as part of future revalidation, competence in these types of surgery will be undertaken of those dentists who offer, after any additional training, such treatments. Patients in particular, may press that the assessment of this competence be robust. Hence the question."

Should anyone have any further questions relating to this then you can contact David himself via this website by searching for his profile in the Forum section.
I have been asked by one of the website' s members to post the following. Please post your reply to these questions.

Thanks

A Department of Health Review Group is considering the issues related to Oral Surgery (OS) and even Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) being provided in a primary dental care setting.

Would ALL General Dental Practitioners and those in secondary care please answer the following questions.

Are you already trained to an acceptable standard to undertake OS (Yes/No) and OMFS (Yes/No)?

Are you willing, for either OS or OMFS to undertake the necessary training that would be robustly assessed and thereafter form part of professional revalidation?

What requirements, if satisfied, would make it more likely that you would say yes to question 2?
